📐 How to Calculate BMI by Hand (Step-by-Step Formulas)
BMI is a mathematical screening ratio originally devised by Belgian mathematician Adolphe Quetelet. There are two primary mathematical formulas depending on your measurement system:
1. Metric BMI Formula (SI Standard)
Example: A person weighs 70 kg and is 1.75 meters (175 cm) tall:
- Step 1: Square the height: 1.75 × 1.75 = 3.0625 m²
- Step 2: Divide weight by squared height: 70 ÷ 3.0625 = 22.86 kg/m²
- Conclusion: BMI is 22.9 (Healthy / Normal Weight).
2. Imperial BMI Formula (US Customary)
Example: A person weighs 154 lbs and is 5 feet 9 inches (69 inches) tall:
- Step 1: Square the height in inches: 69 × 69 = 4,761 in²
- Step 2: Multiply weight by conversion factor 703: 154 × 703 = 108,262
- Step 3: Divide numerator by squared inches: 108,262 ÷ 4,761 = 22.74 kg/m²
- Conclusion: BMI is 22.7 (Healthy / Normal Weight).

👩 BMI for Women vs 👨 BMI for Men: Key Differences
While the mathematical formula for BMI is identical for both men and women, biological body composition differs significantly between sexes:
- Body Fat Distribution: Women naturally possess higher essential body fat percentages (21–33%) than men (8–20%) due to reproductive and hormonal physiology.
- Visceral vs Subcutaneous Fat: Men tend to store fat in the abdominal area (android visceral fat), which carries higher cardiovascular risk at lower BMI thresholds. Women tend to store fat around the hips and thighs (gynoid subcutaneous fat).
- Muscle Density: Men generally have higher skeletal muscle mass, which can artificially raise BMI into the "overweight" category without excessive adipose tissue.
⚠️ Limitations of BMI (When to Use Alternative Metrics)
While BMI is the global gold standard for epidemiological screening, it has known medical limitations in specific populations:
- Muscular Athletes & Bodybuilders: Muscle tissue is approximately 18% denser than adipose tissue. Athletes frequently score BMI > 27 despite having sub-10% body fat.
- Older Adults (Age 65+): Sarcopenia (age-related muscle loss) can mask high body fat in seniors with "normal" BMI. Studies suggest a slightly higher BMI (23–27) is protective in elderly populations.
- Ethnic Variations: The WHO notes that populations of Asian descent often experience cardiovascular and diabetic risks at lower BMI thresholds (overweight at BMI ≥ 23; obesity at BMI ≥ 27.5).
Sources and limitations
- WHO — Obesity and overweight: BMI classification.
- CDC — Adult BMI calculator and categories.
- NHS — BMI healthy weight calculator.
BMI is a population screening measure. It does not distinguish fat from muscle, and thresholds differ for children, older adults, athletes and some ethnic groups (WHO suggests lower cut-offs for many Asian populations). It is not a diagnosis — discuss results with a health professional.

Frequently asked questions
What is a healthy BMI for adult women?
For adult women, a BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 is considered the normal healthy weight range by the World Health Organization (WHO). Women naturally carry higher essential body fat (21–33%) compared to men (8–20%).
What is a healthy BMI for adult men?
For adult men, the standard healthy BMI range is 18.5 to 24.9 kg/m². However, athletic men with high skeletal muscle mass may score above 25.0 without carrying excess body fat.
What is BMI Prime and how is it calculated?
BMI Prime is the ratio of your actual BMI to the upper limit of the normal weight threshold (25.0). A BMI Prime below 0.74 indicates underweight, 0.74 to 1.00 indicates normal weight, and above 1.00 indicates overweight.
How do I calculate BMI by hand using pounds and inches?
Multiply your weight in pounds by 703, then divide that number by your height in inches squared. Formula: BMI = (Weight in lbs × 703) ÷ (Height in inches × Height in inches).
What is the Ponderal Index and how is it different from BMI?
The Ponderal Index (Corpulence Index) divides weight by height cubed (kg/m³) rather than height squared. It provides a more accurate proportionality measure for very tall or very short individuals.
